KEBC Learning Opportunities Programme

VHF Short Range Certificate (SRC)
Evenings of Tuesday, February 28 and Wednesday, February 29, 2012. Venue: Crabshell Inn. The cost of our course is just £35 (half the normal fee) plus £30 for the RYA certificate. This course prepares you to use marine VHF radios including Digital Selective Calling (DSC), which is now the preferred way to make a distress call. The course leads to the award of the RYA Short Range Certificate. The course is well proven and as interactive as possible. Practice radios and computer-based simulators are provided to allow participants to ‘try their hand’. The course requires some prior knowledge. Familiarity with the phonetic alphabet is desirable, as is the ability to define a position. If you don’t have this knowledge, it’s recommended that you attend our ‘Introduction to Charts’ evening (described below).
Introduction to Charts
Evening of Tuesday, February 21, 2012. Venue: Crabshell Inn. Cost: £15 per person
Members will learn to use charts (paper or electronic) and define a position. It is intended as pre-VHF course or for members who just want to learn these essential skills. The course covers how to read and interpret a chart, how to work out position, bearing and distance and how to present the information correctly.
Introduction to Navigation
Evening of Wednesday, February 22, 2012. Venue: Crabshell Inn. Cost: £15 per person. We live in an area where the tides can dominate our boating activities. This course looks at Salcombe’s tides; how to work with them and how they influence simple passages both inside the estuary and locally offshore. We’ll include information about using small boat GPS plotters and positioning systems.
About the instructor
