Visit to Scott Bader

The visit to Scott Bader on 15 March 2010 in Plymouth was thought by all to be extremely successful. Paul Harvey the Manager and our tutor for the evening is very experienced and will give advice readily in the future.

Even those with some experience learned important things like the difference between Gel coats, and flow coats and their curing requirements. Paul demonstrated the application of gel coats and with his young assistants, looking rather fetching in their pinnies, also explained the techniques for getting good quality laminates.

We covered the techniques to repair minor damage to gel coats and the products available to do this effectively.

We also discussed the use of epoxies and their differences to polyesters for timber protection.

Dave from Faracla, the compounding and finishing product producer showed how to prepare and finish a damaged or repaired hull section using the compounds we now have available with our polishing kit. Richard will now be able to advise users.

Paul and his colleague Spencer, who also produced the coffee and biscuits gave up their time free to us and the evening ended with us able to buy products at very discounted prices along with the odd free item.

Attendees gave a small donation which will cover some costs but was not asked for. Excess will go into their RNLI box.
