04.12.2010 Edward Hall is a student at the University of Plymouth studying Merchant Shipping (BSc). He is required to undertake an honours project and is focussing on the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGS). Rob Moore has agreed that members of KEBC can be approached to request their help in completing the survey (online). The questionnaire is anonymous. We hope ALL members will take 5 minutes to do this survey. Click HERE to go to the survey.

01.12.2010 The Kingsbridge Basin Dredge. KEBC has campaigned for the basin to be dredged and fully supports the Harbour Authority proposed plan. ALL boats north of the Crabshell have to be moved from their moorings before work can start (at the latest 31 December). The Club urges any member who has not made arrangements to take their boat out or move it to another mooring to do so as soon as possible. (Click HERE for information about the Dredge or HERE for update in the latest Harbour Newsletter.)

24.11.2010 Mike & Barbara Arnolds' Rescue. The horror movie "Real Rescues"was shown on BBC on Tuesday 23rd November 2010. It was a graphic story. We are pleased Mike and Barbara & their friends were saved by the terrific crew of MT Princess, but sad that Octagon was lost.
18.11.2010 CROSSWORD. Autumn Newsletter. Mary, who compiles the crossword, thanks the six who submitted completed versions. All six were correct. The winning crossword was entered by Chris Shipp and drawn at the 17 November meeting. He gets the T shirt. Solutions will be published in the January bulletin.

Rivermaid Trip
The Boat Club ran an Estuary Trip for members on 25 September 2010. All profits from this trip went towards the Chestnut Appeal. £450 was raised. (Click on photos to supersize)
24.09.2010 Paddling Section. Dave Halsall is setting up a section within the Club for paddlers! He would like information about members' canoeing requirements. (1) Would members like trips on waterways around the area, they can be of 2 hour, half day or full day duration? (2) Considering the season would members be interested in paddling week-days, weekends and/or evenings? (3) Would members like specific short skills sessions to improve skills in both canoe and kayak? (4) What about BBQ plus paddle from the quay at Newbridge, Bowcombe? Dave is open to any suggestions so DO PLEASE contact him on 01548 550205 or email (singingpaddles@hotmail.co.uk). Your feedback will make his commitment worthwhile.

(left) GLOSSY IBIS. This rare species has turned up a few times in Devon over the last few years and has been paddling around at the Aveton Gifford end of the tidal road about 100 metres from the main road. It's a juvenile (hatched this year), but nevertheless worth a good look if you're interested in such things. Start looking out for one on the Estuary. They are distinctive. (Photo: Paul 20.09.2010)
20.09.2010
20.09.2010 The Harbour Authority has written to members with boats moored north of the Crabshell Inn to advise that to facilitate basin dredging boats must be removed from their moorings for 3 months in January 2011. If you don't want to take your boat out, contact the Harbour Office. It appears they will try and find a temporary mooring further down the Estuary.
16.09.2010 Those members involved with Kingsbridge in Bloom will be delighted to share the news that Kingsbridge has received a GOLD award. Well done.

This old Dutch sailing barge "Hoop Op Zegen" (click on photo to supersize) was moored against the wall at the visitors' berth, Kingsbridge Quay, for a week in mid August. According to her skipper/owner she doesn't sail very close to the wind, requires considerable muscle on her enormous tiller and he didn't like losing sight of land when sailing along the south coast from London! She has a shallow draft and port and starboard lee boards. She will over-winter on the Tamar.
21.08.2010 SLAPTON LEY Canoe Trips. By invitation of the Trust, KEBC member Dave Halsall ("Singing Paddles") arranged a day's paddling at Slapton Ley. Trips lasted 1.5 hours from Torcross starting at 6am to hear the dawn chorus. By all accounts, this was memorable for those who took part. Pictured below: members Richard and Charles
18.08.2010 Mike Jayes has written to fishing section members (August 19). "For some obscure reason the week prior to the bank holiday (21st - 29th) tends to be notorious for theft from boats. My advice is to remove all items and ensure your security is as high as possible. On the fishing front, I'm afraid the weather has conspired against us recently but there are still plenty of ray around and I heard of a 9lb+ bass being caught off the bar."
18.08.2010

There was a good turnout of members for the "third Wednesday of the month" informal meeting at the Crabshell on 18 August 2010. It was so good to see Graham & Merle out and about.. KEBC buoy band "Shipmates" broke into song and were enjoyed by members (3rd photo), who for some odd reason managed to arrange themselves in height order. Later, Shipmates entertained inside. You can see them on Youtube by courtesy of Chris Shipp MBHS. Click HERE. (Click on photos to supersize)
10.08.2010
On a recent working trip to St Martins (Scilly) member Adrian Herring not only learned how to catch lobsters and crabs, but how to pick and dress them as well.
09.08.2010 FROGMORE REGATTA on 8 August 2010. The KEBC tent was in attendance and "manned" by members of the Committee. Four visitors to the regatta joined KEBC.
06.08.2010 KILL CORD. If your outboard has a "kill cord" ALWAYS wear it. This was brought home to a member recently when his steering cables broke and his powerful outboard locked and started spinning the boat around at full speed throwing him to the deck. A castrophe was averted only because a quick thinking passenger managed to pull the cord to shut off the engine.

DRAMATIC COASTGUARD RESCUE
(Photos: M Moore)

In full view of the road and patrons of the Crabshell Inn, an unsuspecting sailor provided the usual seasonal entertainment when he navigated off the channel and stuck in the mud on a falling tide. But member Dave Halsall (Singing Paddles) and fellow Coastguards soon ferried the family of four to firmer ground. (Click on photos to supersize)
21.07.2010 Membership: The KEBC Membership Secretary reports that there are now 198 paid up family members.
20.07.2010 STROKES. A member has asked us to publicise this information.
A neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke victim within 3 hours he can reverse the effects of a stroke...TOTALLY!
RECOGNIZING A STROKE. Doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions:
S * .....Ask the individual to SMILE.
T * .....Ask the person to TALK and SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE
R* ......Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.
If he or she has trouble with ANY ONE of these tasks, call an emergency number immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher.
New Sign of a Stroke. Sticking out Tongue. If the tongue is 'crooked' i.e. if it goes to one side or the other, that is also an indication of a stroke.
18.07.2010 S.Devon AONB Photo Competition. Congratulations to Ken Dilley. His photo won 1st Prize in the Classic Landscape Section. You can see it by clicking HERE and the results of voting (when published) at http://www.sdaonb-comp.org.uk. An exhibition of all photos is at Harbour House, Kingsbridge, until 18 July 2010.
12.07.2010 Harbour Board. Nick Alen attended the 12 July 2010 meeting on behalf of KEBC. Click HERE for the agenda and minutes.
27.06.2010 There was a good turnout for the "beach party".Great weather and company. MORE?. The Club is grateful to those members who provided some basic training on KEBC's day on the beach. Colin Pincombe provided some excitement in "Pintail", a Morecambe Bay Post Boat, while Brian Stephens and John Binns took members for cruises in "Sirex" and "Eonmor". Thank to Colin Pincombe for getting some practical training going.
19.06.2010 "Agapanthus" was named at the Crabshell. For more details and photos click HERE. Thanks to Sir Jonathan and Crabshell staff for making it such a good event with £118 raised for the RNLI.
11.06.2010
The new KEBC "in-bloom" dinghy is now in situ and waiting to be planted up. Some beautiful borders and planters will look stunning in a few weeks. The lone cygnet is growing and shows the advantage of having a shallow draft in the Estuary. It can motor around while Mother has to waddle in the mud.
11.06.2010 KEBC members Mike & Barbara Arnold made international headlines on 10 June 2010. They were on passage from the Azores with two friends in their Moody 376 "Octagon", when severe weather hit them 300 miles from Spain. They were safely rescued by a huge supertanker but Octagon sank. They should arrive back in UK in a few days via Santander. Our best wishes to them. More details, click HERE.
7.06.2010 Ian Drinkwater and Richard Smith attended the 7 June 2010 meeting on behalf of KEBC. Click HERE for the minutes (now available online).
29.05.2010
The Crabshell Inn has been most tastefully re-decorated by the new owners. Landlord Simon Harrow has made a real impression with quality planters and tropical plants. KEBC members were delighted with their "new" brightened HQ and turned out in numbers for the first informal summer meeting on 19 May 2010.
29.05.2010
With only a few snags, we witness the launch of Sir Jonathan's solar powered boat. For photos click HERE

Rob & Ian in the middle of a Boat Security Meeting with Sgt Jane Corkhill. Also pictured is Gazette reporter, Jenni Briscoe Some members were disappointed that a report on tackling marine crime in the Estuary in the Gazette (22 April 2010) made no mention of the work done by KEBC Boatwatch teams.
21.04.2010
The speaker at this last indoor meeting of the winter series was Roger Barrett who talked about merchant sailing vessels of Salcombe and Kingsbridge 1800–1914, particularly fruit schooners. He described the development of a schooner rig which gave the Kingsbridge and Salcombe ship builders 'an edge' as the design produced "fruit schooners" that were fast, manoeuvrable and economical, and able to bring in oranges quicker than competitors. Shipyards were constructed along the Salcombe and Kingsbridge shores. In Kingsbridge these occupied the foreshore known as Date's Quay, (near where the ' Moorings' jut out into the estuary). William Dates's yard built 130 ships. The advent of paddle steamers brought the boom to an end in the early 20th century. A new quay was built to accommodate the steamers. This was Bond's Quay (or New Quay) now known as Crabshell Quay.
21.04.2010
At the indoor meeting on 21 April 2010, our popular hosts at the Crabshell, Yvonne and Dave were presented with a framed photo (Chris Shipp) of the Crabshell.
01.04.2010 WARNING... Fiber Worms have been posing a low level threat to GRP boats for some time. At worst they have caused a bit of brown staining around the water line. Over the last season they have become more aggresive by invading the gel coat which can lead to a degradation of the underlying resin. In severe cases it has become spongiform. Member Roger Peeke has emailed to say that he has limited supplies of a good, cheap treatment, similar to "Foraoil" developed by NASA, but mixed with LP (marine). This should be applied at the same time as anti-fouling. The threat is increasing so NOW is the best time to apply it for the season. First come first served. For more information email Roger.Peeke@googlemail.com.
31.03.2010 Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Agencies (IFCAs) are advertising for people with marine and coastal knowledge to apply to join them (by April 12). More details click HERE.
31.03.2010 HOPE COVE LIFEBOAT. KEBC member Ted Tipping has sent in an email to say that maintaining the Hope Cove lifeboat PRIVATELY is a "last option". The preferred option is for the MCA to continue to support and operate the boat. A PETITION TO 10 DOWNING STREET has been made to this effect, which requires signatures. If members wish to support this PETITION, follow this link. http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/list . Select "Transport & Infrastructure" which opens a list of current open petitions. Select David England - 2 April 2010 and SUPPORT it if you wish to.

BOAT JUMBLE
The Club held a boat jumble sale on Saturday 27 March 2010 at the Crabshell Inn, courtesy of Dave & Yvonne. It was not intended to be a fund-raising event, but even so, £106.45 was raised for RNLI and £88.50 for KEBC funds (this included £10 from a member who had been selling offcuts from a boat-build project). And everyone seemed to find it worthwhile. Some photos by Chris Shipp are shown. (Click on them to supersize)

We were delighted that Mr Ian Gibson was able to visit us with members of the Harbour Board....

10.03.2010 There is a mistake in the KEBC tide table booklet. The high tide on 13 May 2010 at 0519 GMT has a height of 4.8m and NOT 5.8m as printed. Please amend your copy NOW!!
08.03.2010 At the KEBC meeting at the Crabshell on 17 January 2010, Beth Henshall, representing "Finding Sanctuary" was asked several questions. She has expanded on some of her responses and has sent more information to us. CLICK HERE to read it.

08.03.2010 The AGM on 17 February 2010 was well attended. Chairman Rob Moore reported on a good year with several "firsts" for the Club. Membership stands at almost 200 family members. The Treasurer reported a healthy bank balance & thanked Claire Drinkwater for auditing the accounts. The Boatwatch Co-ordinator was pleased with the year and the 75% reduction in marine crime in the area was surely due in some part the Club's regular Boatwatch duties and marking days which raised security awareness. The appreciation of members for the work done by the Committee was minuted.
27.02.2010
At a packed AGM on 17.02.2010 Sir Jonathan Tod updated members on his progress with his solar powered boat build. Four main things should be mentioned here. (1) Do not miss the naming ceremony at the Crabshell at the end of June. The Champagne will flow! (2) "Hello Solar" is not a preferred choice of name. (3) "Amy Blush" is a condition that affects boats not sailors. (4) He has surplus hardwood/marine ply offcuts at 50p a lot for KEBC funds.
20.02.2010 At the Harbour Board meeting of 1 February 2010 approval was given for funding for a study to ascertain the environmental impact of sediment plume dispersion dredging on the Estuary. Subject to a satisfactory outcome, maintenance dredging of the Kingsbridge Basin will begin in Autumn/Winter 2010/11. It was also made clear in the minutes that owners of private moorings are responsible for their maintenance.Click HERE to read minutes in full.
Chairman Rob Moore and Nick Alen represented KEBC.
27.01.2010 Tender stolen from the Quay slipway sometime between 6 & 26 Jan 2010. It was chained to a ring on the harbour office allocated site and the chain had been cut. It was a green Plastimo 200 . This has been reported to the police and the harbour office. If you saw anything OR have a suitable replacement for the owner, please contact KEBC Secretary or see the wanted advert in "members' adverts".

For several weeks Neil White was front page news as he made an impact on YouTube with his version of "Man of Constant Sorrow" and a couple of other songs recorded by club member Chris Shipp. But Neil has now been redesignated as an archive item. The hit count is as of 20 February 2010. If you want an update, you'll just have to double click on each clip.
07.01.2010 At the 2009 Christmas Dinner, the Landlord & Landlady of the Crabshell Inn were given honorary life membership of the Club. They have written to thank us.
