24.12.2009 Latest News of Members...... Ian Drinkwater writes.....The club was very pleased to hear an update on Graham Oke from Paul Bretherick at the recent Christmas party. Graham is making good progress. Ian is planning to put together a file of such pictures to give to Graham in the New Year. Anyone with some photos which might be relevant is asked to E mail them to ianclairedrinkwater@btinternet.com. Malcolm Jameson .. Malcolm is in Ivydene Care Home, Staniforth Drive, Ivybridge, PL21 0UJ.. If you get a chance, Malcolm will be pleased to see you or hear from you.
16.12.2009 Christmas Party Nearly 80 members enjoyed a good Christmas Party. Thanks Rob & Madeline for organising it. Dave and Yvonne were presented with a certificate conferring Honorary Life Membership of KEBC. Thanks to "The Whalers", non members of KEBC, who came along to entertain and did a great job. If you wish to see photos of the event, go to the photo gallery.

On his way to work at 7.00am member Norman Dilley noticed this Sailfish (mooring No.009) trapped under ladder 008 with 2 hours to go to highwater. He sent his customary email to fellow members, who were unable to release it, and had to wait for the tide to eventually fall. Sadly, by then, water had covered the hatch and filled the cockpit. The Harbour Authority were informed and attended. To avoid this happening to your boat, keep the aft buoy mooring tight to keep the bow away from the wall. Scroll down to news 5 April 2009.
21.11.2009 For all those of you who follow Kingsbridge in Bloom with interest, and the KEBC dinghy display in particular, don't be concerned if you see things missing from it over the next few weeks. In line with KIB plans for 2010, it is due to be moved to a new location (still on the Embankment) and changes are in preparation for this move. It might even "transform" into a newer dinghy.
19.11.2009 CROSSWORD. Several members attempted the crossword in the Autumn Newsletter and there were THREE correct ones. Of these, Mick Gates' was the one drawn and he can claim a KEBC T shirt of his choice. Well done Mick and thanks to Mary and Neil for preparing it.
18.11.2009
At a packed November indoor meeting neither the Harbour Master or Club's representative on the Harbour Board was able to attend, so Chairman Rob Moore gave an update on what was happening. Principally, it was that, as has been mooted, the Kingsbridge Basin is scheduled to be "dredged"sometime next Autumn (2010) using the same technique used successfully at the Fish Quay in Salcombe. There was a very encouraging update on Boat Security from Ian Drinkwater and the local Police, who were most complimentary about the Boatwatch scheme. It seems that boat crime is very low at this end of the Estuary. Ian was also pleased to announce that the Police had provided funding for a night vision spotlight which, together with the night vision scope would allow those on Boatwatch to keep their eyes on those up to no good, without being seen themselves! Also, Bob Burnside ran a "Lifeboat Stall" and sent in this message
"Just to let you know we took £193.00 last night. That was a great take and on behalf of Salcombe Lifeboat Treasurer can I say a very big thank you to all the Members who purchased from the stall. Every penny counts and that was really appreciated. Again many thanks. Bob".

Conditions at sea on Saturday morning (14 November 2009) were horrendous as the photos below show. Left: waves breaking over the harbour wall at Hope Cove. Centre: Onlookers on the west side of the Bigbury-Burgh Island causeway are dwarfed by enormous seas. Right: Although getting some shelter, the Bar at Salcombe is very angry.(Click to supersize)

With severe SW gales forecast for the weekend boats were already starting to feel the strain late afternoon. Right: boats straining at Bowcombe.
13.11.2009
There was drama off Clipper Quay. Neil and Gill White write: "A breakaway two-master fetched up at the bottom of our garden on Friday 13th (!) banging against the concrete of an inspection pit. Boat Club members had rescued another boat from almost exactly the same spot in October 2006.Gill rang the Harbour Office which identified the owner and rang his elderly mother, a neighbour of the Whites who lives alone. The boat turned out to belong to a man currently in Australia. Gill contacted Wills Marine then, meantime, tried to get improvised fenders deployed but it couldn't be done against that strong southerly wind. Wills came out in their workboat and very efficiently towed the runaway off the foreshore and free of further damage. Later, what appeared in the dimming light to be a Harbour Office boat arrived to lend a hand in seeking a safer berth at the head of the Estuary."
31.10.2009 Membership October 2009. There are currently 174 members (and this does not include husbands, partners, wives, children etc covered by the "family" membership category). A further 15 appear to be members but there is no record of their sub payment. 158 members have boats of which 87 are mainly motor, 67 mainly sail and 4 rowing.

Kingsbridge Square buzzed with a WWII military theme in support of the Royal British Legion's poppy appeal. The event was supported by Kingsbridge organisations including the Boat Club. Below: The Club's portable HQ was well supported. Click on photo to supersize.

The Crabshell Inn was packed for the first indoor meeting of the Autumn/Winter programme on Wednesday evening 21 October 2009. Members were given an informed and interesting talk by Mervyn Kettle, a volunteer and consultant to the Cornwall based disaster relief organisation, ShelterBox. There was over £100 in the collection bucket at the end, which is a measure of the regard members have for this charity. Pictured left, Mervyn shows an open Shelterbox, alongside Madeline Moore, KEBC Secretary.
21.10.2009 Autumn Newsletters were distributed to members who were present at the indoor meeting. Other posted or delivered by hand.
22.09.09

KEBC member, Malcolm Jameson was finishing a lunchtime meal in the Crabshell with his wife Vera and friends, when a lorry that was unloading a fork lift truck for Crabshell Heights flats, overbalanced. It crashed into the Crabshell car park, demolished the wall and crushed Malcolm's car. Malcolm's main concern was that his one and only CD copy of "Barnacle Bill the Sailor" was not damaged. This is the adopted anthem of the British Hydrographicological Society, of which Malcolm is the senior member. Fortunately no-one was injured although the lorry driver had a few grazes. The incident caused severe disruption to traffic on what is at best a narrow bit of road.(Click on photos to supersize)

Several members attended the third Wednesday social get-together at the Crabshell Inn.
05.09.09

On Saturday 5 September 2009, 12 KEBC members went on an evening cruise out of Brixham on "Vigilance". By all accounts, this was a most enjoyable and interesting Club outing. 01.09.09 SPEEDING. At least one member of the Club has been caught doing more than 8 knots and faces the risk of having his boat impounded. Furthermore, Harbour Staff are checking the measurements of boats. If your boat is longer or wider than you said it was, you risk having your mooring taken away.
31.08.09 RED DIESEL. After 30 November 2008 it became illegal to use red diesel in a marine boat engine for propulsion purposes unless full duty (as per road diesel) had been paid on it. Registered commercial fisherman are exempt. We checked with Customs and Excise and they agreed that old red diesel which had been stocked up prior to 01/11/2008 could be used up. They also would not prosecute on the basis of the red dye stains being found in the engine or tank. However, by now if they dip a tank and find a high proportion of red diesel, they will expect strong evidence that duty has been paid on it. With no evidence a heavy fine will be imposed and the boat impounded. This has happened.
19.08.09

There was a good turnout at the monthly informal meeting at the Crabshell Inn and several new members, and rejoining members put in an appearance. We were delighted that Dave Halsall (Singing Paddles) brought along his canoes and many members took the opportunity to sample paddling under his guidance.

17.08.09 FASTNET. Congratulations to the crew of "Clem" (La Floresta del Mar) that won its class in the Fastnet Challenge. See "News Archive" for more information, and http://fastnet.rorc.org/2009-fleet-tracking.html for details of Fastnet results.
16.08.09 FROGMORE REGATTA. Several members attended this event and the Committee "stewarded" the KEBC tent all day. There was considerable interest in the display and several new members joined the Club.

Like Zebedee in the Magic Roundabout, Chairman Rob Moore seems to pop up wherever there's a photo opportunity. Here he is bumping into Skipper Pedro Amengual and crew member Alberto Paquet. They're busy preparing "Clem", a 56 foot Swan class, for the August Fastnet Race in which they hope to be a front runner. Clem is moored in Salcombe until about the 24 July waiting to be joined by the rest of the highly experienced crew (14 in all). For the race Clem will be skippered by owner Jaime Olazabal who has local (Salcombe) interests. To follow Clem's progress visit www.clem-56-swan.blogspot.com Alberto has also taken part in Salcombe yawl racing and has taken impressive photos which he has uploaded (click here). He will mail members quality images if they contact him at albertopaquet@hotmail.com Thanks Alberto and all the best to Clem and all those who sail on her from KEBC.

A yacht hit a rock off Lannacombe and had to be towed into Salcombe by RNLI. Members are reminded that there are some nasty rocks lurking between Prawle Point and Start Point. Generally you'll be OK if you keep seaward of a line between the two points .. but do check.

22.06.09 A day's fishing for Paul & Mike was brought to an abrupt end when they caught a 31 ft Bayliner which was drifting without power a mile off Bolt Tail. At a steady 3 mph they managed to tow it over the Bar and into the Harbour. (Photo: Mike Jayes)

17.06.09

Some twenty members attended the Social Evening at the Crabshell Inn and enjoyed a convivial evening. Above: Who said the art of conversation was dead. KEBC members appear to want to do anything but talk to one another.

But it was different for members of the BHS who celebrated the inauguration of Nick and Chris (top left, bottom left). After a month's probation, Nick and Chris will graduate to silver hat ceremonial headgear.
12.06.09
Over the weekend during a 'Character Boats Regatta.' a flotilla of Postboats visited the Kingsbridge end of the Estuary and were photographed by Gill White off Clipper Quay. Postboats are so-called because they used to deliver mail around Scottish islands. Members, Colin and Joan Pincombe joined the others in their own Postboat, 'Pintail' which regularly graces local waters.

Norman Dilley snapped this sunset over Kingsbridge Estuary. Yes, Kingsbridge.

07.06.09 Message from Chairman. Members may not be aware that over the last six weeks Madeline and I have been unavailable due to family illness. We would like to thank the Committee and members for "holding the fort" during this time.
07.06.09 Rob assumes members have read the newsletter but he has had no response to his requests that members let him know (1) of any items of equipment that it would be useful for the Club to purchase for members to borrow or (2) if you have a skill, equipment or time you are prepared to offer in a KEBC members' directory. Please let Rob know direct or use the Guest Book/Message Board
07.06.09 Planning Application ref: 28/0803/09/F Skateboard Park Kingsbridge. Any members who have comments about this application please contact South Hams District Council, Follaton House, Totnes by 12 June 2009. The Chairman raised the concerns of a few members at the last Harbour Board meeting. Individual members need to make personal representations to South Hams DC.

Top left: Graham Price admires his caricature drawn by Neil White and presented to him on 20 May 2009 "for services to KEBC". Bottom: Mother Duck brings her seven ducklings to see Neil White at Clipper Quay, to whom thay have become very attached because he feeds them and gives guitar and ukulele lessons.

31.05.09

On a beautiful sunny day some 15 members cruised down to Egremont from Kingsbridge for a couple of hours over lunch. Above, several members relax in the saloon. Perhaps the most remarkable thing from the day was that members Ted Tipping and George Howard discovered that not only were they brought up a few yards from one another and that their birthday was only days apart, but that as youngsters they played on the Egremont when she was a ferry across the Mersey.

Boat Marking Security days are hard and stressful

20 May 2009: ADA is having major refurbishment. It'll be good to see the old girl back on the water.

17.05.09

Some pictures from very successful KEBC Boat Security and Marking days. Top: Ian, George and PCSO Ashley Hawkes. Middle: The Pincombes and Hanburys salute the Marking Tent as they cruise by in "Pintail" (left) and "Lucy". Bottom: George and Gill work rapidly to get the job done while Claire keeps a lookout for the local Civil Enforcement Officer.

13.05.09

KEBC is non-political but at a recent Club display in Salcombe, Chairman Rob Moore (2nd from left), Secretary Madeline Moore, Claire and Ian Drinkwater (Vice Chairman & Boatwatch Co-ordinator) share a photo with Kingsbridge Town Mayor Rufus Gilbert (extreme left) and Councillor Julian Brazil (extreme right).

12.05.09 Madeline has requested that any members who would like to go to Southampton Boat Show on a date to be decided between 11-20 September 2009, that they would let her know. If there is enough interest she'll book a coach for a "club outing".
07.05.09 Alan Purchase has sent in an article from the "Boat Fishing Monthly" magazine, December 2008 issue. It is a 2 page colour feature on KEBC and the Boatwatch Scheme written by Colin Davis. A copy will appear in due course on the Club's display board.
02.05.09

The boat marking and security day at the Visitors' pontoon was a great success and KEBC Vice-Chairman & Boatwatch Co-ordinator Ian Drinkwater was presented with a cheque for £300 from the local Constabulary. This was a contribution towards the Club's expenses in running the Boatwatch and Boat Security scheme.

29.04.09 Committee meeting in Crabshell
27.04.09

Catch of the Month. KEBC Committee Member Nick Alen caught this 16lb Pollock earlier this month off Salcombe. He's been feeding off it for three weeks, and reckons there are another 10 meals to go. This is one way to beat the recession and demise of Somerfields. Please note that we consider that members of KEBC are mature enough to say "Pollock" without embarrassment, so we will not be calling it "Colin" in line with current supermarket hype.

26.04.09 Members Neil & Gill White organised another folk concert, the 13th in the series at the Crabshell. It featured the Carrivick Sisters and was a sell out. The audience was delighted. Further details in due course on the South Hams Traditional Music website (www.shamstrad.co.uk) which is currently under construction.
15.04.09 On a wet evening, some 25 members braved the weather to put in an appearance at KEBC's first informal summer meeting at the Crabshell.
11.04.09

The Wills Marine Boat Show on The Square appears to have been a great success. The top photos show people milling around the KEBC tent (top left) while (top right) the KEBC Committee are rushed off their feet. But they did coerce fifteen people to join the Club or renew membership and David Spencer was the winner of the Herring Shoes sponsored Deck Shoes. The bottom photo shows Rob Moore totally over the moon in his new acquisition which befits a Club Chairman. The size of the downpayment hasn't registered yet. Wed 15 April 2009 Breaking News. Looks like Rob's dream was short-lived. He just got carried away on the day. He confirmed last night that he won't be having the latest Nordkapp after all.

05.04.09 Danger. Members with boats moored along the wall should be aware that on a rising tide, the bow can get trapped in the access ladder which can cause damage to the boat and lift the ladder. This happened last year and again on 4 April 2009 to a different boat. As the owner the boat is away, KEBC members Richard Smith & Norman Dilley have endeavoured to secure the situation. The Harbour Master has been informed. A good tip for boat owners is to tie the stern mooring buoy such that it's only just possible to pull the bow to the ladder for embarking/disembarking. This way the boat will stay clear of the ladder.
01.04.09 Members' advertisments. Several new advertisements have been added to the members' adverts section. For more details on the classic Hillyard "Terpsichore", click here.
01.04.09 Spring Newsletter. This has now been printed and is being delivered/posted so that all members should receive their copy and 2009/10 membership card by 1 April.
31.03.09 Kingsbridge Town Council have announced that Graham is their Citizen of the Year for leading the Kingsbridge in Bloom project. Members send their congratulations.
27 .03.09 WEBSITE. . The Boat Club website is having a Spring Clean. Several archive pages will be replaced by new material which will appear over the coming weeks and months.

All tickets were sold well in advance of the night and some super old time American Music was enjoyed by a delighted audience, many of whom were KEBC members.
