Meeting. Author Julian
Stockwin gave an enthralling
maritime presentation and brought
along many artifacts to add
atmosphere to his talk. On the trip back to
Ivybridge Julian remarked to John
Binns 'it was a delight to talk
to a knowledgeable audience; one
that understood the sea'. Bob
Burnside brought along his
Christmas RNLI stall and was
delighted to sell £188.44
of cards and gifts, and
sends his thanks to members for
their support. Julian Stockwin
brought along a goody bag which
was raffled and raised £60
which was added to a cheque for £200
(raised at the autumn barbecue)
which was presented to Andrew
Arthur of Salcombe RNLI. Again,
thanks Crabshell for nibbles and venue. |

Consultation During the
summer the Harbour Board completed the first

published for Public Consultation. A copy
of the plan can be downloaded from the Harbour
Authority web page (click HERE) or alternatively a copy can be
collected direct from the Harbour Office in
Salcombe. This plan is not as ambitious as
the previous five year plan and provides a period
of consolidation. |

Winter Series
INDOOR MEETING 19 October 2011. There
was a good turnout for this meeting, the
first of the winter series. Members were
given an update by Sergeant Dave Green
and Autumn newsletters were distributed
to those present. Chairman John Binns
outlined things that had happened and
were planned. Acclaimed author Julian
Stockwin will speak at the 16 November
meeting and there will be a
"Lifeboat Stall" with Christmas
Cards etc on sale. The highlight of the
evening was John Gobbett explaining how
to winterise outboards. He demonstrated a
variety of techniques and tools and is
pictured with the ultimate tool to use if
all the others fail. Thanks to the Crabshell for venue
and nibbles. |

On Friday 16 September 2011, two
irresponsible boatowners were taken to court.
They had hefty fines of over £700 imposed upon
them by Torquay Magistrates for breaking Salcombe
Harbour Byelaws. One caused £1000 of damage to
Ian Drinkwater's boat by colliding with it at
speed while Ian was on boatwatch patrol. The
other was warned for breaking harbour speed
limits and was then recorded exceeding them. |

Sergeant David Green
Chairman John Binns welcomed
Sergeant David Green to the 12 September
2011 committee meeting. David advised
that he was impressed with the Club's

a determined police push to reduce marine
crime in the area. |

| The
end of season barbecue on turned out to
be very enjoyable, and over fifty members
turned up to enjoy the beautiful grounds
and view at "Keeve", Peter and
Angie Betteridges' new home. There was a
lot of preparation involved and hard work
put in by Lin, John, Richard and Liz,
Madeline, Teresa and Alan. The food and
Pimms were great. Considerable generosity
was shown by those who donated prizes for
the raffle which, together with a small
profit on food and drink sales raised
£200 for the RNLI. Chairman John Binns
presented Peter (above right) with some
flowers and a polo shirt as a token of
our appreciation for him and Angie
opening up their house for us. The cheque
to the RNLI will be presented at a later
date. |

| Stand-up-Paddling.
Many members have tried their hand at
paddle boarding at Crabshell Quay. since Kingsbridge
Estuary Stand Up Paddling (KESUP) was launched. Members are
advised though, that while it may look
dignified and gracious to be able to do
SUP (stand-up paddling) properly, the
whole cool effect can be totally lost if
you're not colour co-ordinated. (Click

Kingsbridge
Medieval Celebrations 18 June 2011. Members
of the Boat Club were involved in many
and varied ways. Top left, Simon Harrow
(alias Sir Prancelot) revived the
medieval sport of paddle board jousting.
The purpose of this sport was not to kill
or maim your opponent as in the later
sit-on-a-cart-horse version, but merely
to push them off their board and give
them a good dunking. And what a spectacle
this turned out to be in front of the
Crabshell. There aren't many things more
entertaining than watching someone dumped
unceremoniously into the wet stuff. Four
knights competed. After much jousting the
elastic rules eventually gave us a much
despised winner, Pete, the Dark Prince.
Traditonally, the prize would have been
to ravish the fair tournament maiden, but
no-one watching fitted this description
so the Dark Prince had to make do with a
celebratory pint. Photo Bottom left:

Harbour Five Year Business Plan 2012 to
2017
The Harbour Authority is currently formulating a
business plan for the period 2012 to 2017. The
previous plan, which has formed the basis of the
Harbours work and improvements programme for the
period 2007 to 2011, can be accessed for
reference on the Harbours web page (Click HERE). The Harbour Board would like to know
from all harbour users and stakeholders how they
would like the Harbour to be managed over the
next five years. What improvements they would
like to see, the problems that your members or
groups have encountered and how they would like
to see them addressed? The Board will then
consider all of the feedback and proposals along
with the associated financial implications when
formulating the Business Plan 2012 to 2017.
Feedback should be addressed to the Harbour
Office to arrive by Friday 6 May 2011.The Committee sent in KEBC proposals
regarding plans for the Estuary in the next 5
years.

Member Sue
sent in this appreciative account of an evening
paddling with Singing Paddles.
Evening Paddle - Wednesday May 4th
2011 We paddled from
Bowcombe on an incoming tide and into a good
breeze. (A great way to warm up, paddling into a
good breeze!) Crossing the estuary into Collapit
Creek we soon encountered the peace and quiet
that these wonderful places offer - and lots of
birdlife too. Paddling is in it's own way a
meditation of mind and body - a peaceful rhythm
we create so we can experience life and nature
and a much slower pace. A rare thing in our busy
lives. It also enables us to see the surroundings
we often take for granted from a new
perspective. Returning across the estuary
to come home the wind dropped a good deal, and by
the time we reached Charleton Marshes it was a
gentle paddle in the soft evening light back to
Bowcombe. We had the estuary almost to ourselves
save for the occasional flight of curlews
(fabulous!) and a special encounter
with a very nice lady barbequeing with her
teenage son on a little beach - thank you for the
hot dog, it was very welcome. Paddling is hungry
work!! It was a really great two hours,
thanks Dave. |

From Nick
Alen. The play Bound
is on at the Drum theatre (part of the Theatre
Royal Building) in Plymouth from 21- 25 June
2011. Compelled by the threat of
bankruptcy, fishing trawler The
Violet and its mismatched crew are forced
out into treacherous weather. Battling each
others egos, their lives ashore
and a relentless storm, will they lose more than
a way of life? Set in Brixham, Bound is a
bracingly physical tragic comedy from the
Bear Trap, Theatre Company. |

Scott
Bader are converting two units at

They remain extremely welcoming and helpful,

over proceedings and John Binns was
elected new Chairman. Only Nick Alen
stood down from the Committee. The rest
were then re-elected en bloc for a
further 12 months. Claire Drinkwater
retired as Auditor and member Tom
Phillips was elected to this position. |
| After
the AGM member Dave Halsall (of Singing Paddles) gave a talk "An
Introduction to Canoeing".
Dave, who has paddled all over
the world and at a seriously
competent level explained the
differences between kayaking and
canoeing and how canoeing can
make nature so accessible.
Paddling can take you to parts of
the Kingsbridge Estuary that
other boats cannot reach. |

Paddle
Lifting
Dave demonstrated the
different sorts of paddle used in
different kinds of kayaking and
canoeing. He didn't say much
about paddle-lifting, which has
it roots in weight lifting, but
is done with canoe/kayak paddles.
Although it is not likely to
feature in the Olympics for some
time paddle-lifting is growing in
popularity. Members were
priveleged to see Dave
demonstrate some of the lifts.
