Indoor Meeting. Author Julian Stockwin gave an enthralling maritime presentation and brought along many artifacts to add atmosphere to his talk. On the trip back to Ivybridge Julian remarked to John Binns 'it was a delight to talk to a knowledgeable audience; one that understood the sea'. Bob Burnside brought along his Christmas RNLI stall and was delighted to sell £188.44 of cards and gifts, and sends his thanks to members for their support. Julian Stockwin brought along a goody bag which was raffled and raised £60 which was added to a cheque for £200 (raised at the autumn barbecue) which was presented to Andrew Arthur of Salcombe RNLI. Again, thanks Crabshell for nibbles and venue.

16.11.2011 Autumn Issue 14 Crossword. All entries received were correct. Well done to Lyn Lee whose completed crossword was the first one drawn from the hat at the November meeting.
07.11.2011 Minutes of the Salcombe Harbour Board meeting of 7 November 2011 are available to read on line. Click HERE. Ian and Paul attended this meeting. The Club's liaison Board member, Hugh Marriage, was also present.
25.10.2011 Kingsbridge Recreation Ground Members who felt able to are thanked for supporting Kingsbridge in Blooms' request for Nat West funding. Eventually, over 160 votes were recorded.

Pilot Gigs at Crabshell Quay. As part of a Devon wide challenge, some nine pilot gigs raced from Salcombe to the Crabshell at Kingsbridge and back (men up, women down) on the tide on Saturday 22 October 2011. And what a great sight for Kingsbridge to see so much activity on the water. (Click on photos to supersize)
20.10.2011 SHA Public Consultation During the summer the Harbour Board completed the first round of consultation for the draft Strategic Business Plan 2012-2017, which has now been published for Public Consultation.  A copy of the plan can be downloaded from the Harbour Authority web page (click HERE) or alternatively a copy can be collected direct from the Harbour Office in Salcombe.  This plan is not as ambitious as the previous five year plan and provides a period of consolidation.

Winter Series INDOOR MEETING 19 October 2011. There was a good turnout for this meeting, the first of the winter series. Members were given an update by Sergeant Dave Green and Autumn newsletters were distributed to those present. Chairman John Binns outlined things that had happened and were planned. Acclaimed author Julian Stockwin will speak at the 16 November meeting and there will be a "Lifeboat Stall" with Christmas Cards etc on sale. The highlight of the evening was John Gobbett explaining how to winterise outboards. He demonstrated a variety of techniques and tools and is pictured with the ultimate tool to use if all the others fail. Thanks to the Crabshell for venue and nibbles.
16.09.2011 Congratulations to Kingsbridge in Bloom and those members of KEBC involved in it. They have won another Gold AND a prize Cup.
16.09.2011 On Friday 16 September 2011, two irresponsible boatowners were taken to court. They had hefty fines of over £700 imposed upon them by Torquay Magistrates for breaking Salcombe Harbour Byelaws. One caused £1000 of damage to Ian Drinkwater's boat by colliding with it at speed while Ian was on boatwatch patrol. The other was warned for breaking harbour speed limits and was then recorded exceeding them.
12.09.2011
Sergeant David Green
Chairman John Binns welcomed Sergeant David Green to the 12 September 2011 committee meeting. David advised that he was impressed with the Club's Boatwatch scheme and that there would be a determined police push to reduce marine crime in the area.

The end of season barbecue on turned out to be very enjoyable, and over fifty members turned up to enjoy the beautiful grounds and view at "Keeve", Peter and Angie Betteridges' new home. There was a lot of preparation involved and hard work put in by Lin, John, Richard and Liz, Madeline, Teresa and Alan. The food and Pimms were great. Considerable generosity was shown by those who donated prizes for the raffle which, together with a small profit on food and drink sales raised £200 for the RNLI. Chairman John Binns presented Peter (above right) with some flowers and a polo shirt as a token of our appreciation for him and Angie opening up their house for us. The cheque to the RNLI will be presented at a later date.
25.08.2011
Stand-up-Paddling. Many members have tried their hand at paddle boarding at Crabshell Quay. since Kingsbridge Estuary Stand Up Paddling (KESUP) was launched. Members are advised though, that while it may look dignified and gracious to be able to do SUP (stand-up paddling) properly, the whole cool effect can be totally lost if you're not colour co-ordinated. (Click on photo only if you're wearing shades)
21.08.2011
Member Dave Halsall did some filming with BBC Countryfile about paddling in the Estuary. It was shown on 21 August 2011. There was great coverage of the Estuary and Harbour. Well done Dave. The photo shows Countryfile's Matt Baker with Dave Halsall at Bowcombe. Some members' boats can be spotted in the background.

Salcombe Regatta fireworks
Members motored down to Salcombe to watch the fireworks. Very impressive they were. Thanks to Mike and Barbara for letting us watch from the cockpit of Puffin of Dart. (NB Mike wears the logo on his jacket sleeve just to reassure Barbara...we're glad he's better)
Pollock
Adrian with a nice Pollock. Unusually, this one was caught on the Range over sand (they're usually rocky ledge loving fish) on light tackle with a silver spinner. They make a good supper, but are best after 24 hours in the fridge.

At the August informal meeting, Dave Penwill and Hedley Beavis, a representative of Sole diesels, demonstrated the finer points of inboard diesels and how to look after them. (above) Most members were content just to look at the engines. But Suzanne (left) found one engine particularly attractive and was irresistibly drawn to it.

The Sunday meet at Hope Cove was cancelled on the Saturday due to poor weather outlook but what a difference 24 hours can make ... conditions were just perfect and many members took the opportunity to get out. Pictured below are Barbara, Paul and Annie in Cindy on their way to board "Puffin of Dart" and Brian with a mystery passenger in Sirex.

Kingsbridge Medieval Celebrations 18 June 2011. Members of the Boat Club were involved in many and varied ways. Top left, Simon Harrow (alias Sir Prancelot) revived the medieval sport of paddle board jousting. The purpose of this sport was not to kill or maim your opponent as in the later sit-on-a-cart-horse version, but merely to push them off their board and give them a good dunking. And what a spectacle this turned out to be in front of the Crabshell. There aren't many things more entertaining than watching someone dumped unceremoniously into the wet stuff. Four knights competed. After much jousting the elastic rules eventually gave us a much despised winner, Pete, the Dark Prince. Traditonally, the prize would have been to ravish the fair tournament maiden, but no-one watching fitted this description so the Dark Prince had to make do with a celebratory pint. Photo Bottom left: Pete, The Dark Prince, is eyed up by Sean, The White Stuff Knight, and KEBC member Ollie AKA Sir Lawrence Olliereillyer (right). This was good fun (well done to all the paddlers) and will, hopefully, be repeated next year. 06.06.2011 Salcombe Harbour Board 6 June 2011. John Binns attended this meeting for KEBC. Our new representative on the Board is Hugh Marriage. MINUTES now online (Click HERE ). It looks like mooring deposits will go up from £50 to £125 next year!

The Club is pleased to welcome Capn Taylor as a new member.
06.05.2011 Salcombe Harbour – Five Year Business Plan 2012 to 2017
The Harbour Authority is currently formulating a business plan for the period 2012 to 2017. The previous plan, which has formed the basis of the Harbours work and improvements programme for the period 2007 to 2011, can be accessed for reference on the Harbour’s web page (Click
HERE). The Harbour Board would like to know from all harbour users and stakeholders how they would like the Harbour to be managed over the next five years. What improvements they would like to see, the problems that your members or groups have encountered and how they would like to see them addressed? The Board will then consider all of the feedback and proposals along with the associated financial implications when formulating the Business Plan 2012 to 2017. Feedback should be addressed to the Harbour Office to arrive by Friday 6 May 2011.

The Committee sent in KEBC proposals regarding plans for the Estuary in the next 5 years.

04.05.2011 Member Sue sent in this appreciative account of an evening paddling with Singing Paddles.
Evening Paddle - Wednesday May 4th 2011   We paddled from Bowcombe on an incoming tide and into a good breeze. (A great way to warm up, paddling into a good breeze!) Crossing the estuary into Collapit Creek we soon encountered the peace and quiet that these wonderful places offer - and lots of birdlife too. Paddling is in it's own way a meditation of mind and body - a peaceful rhythm we create so we can experience life and nature and a much slower pace. A rare thing in our busy lives. It also enables us to see the surroundings we often take for granted from a new perspective.   Returning across the estuary to come home the wind dropped a good deal, and by the time we reached Charleton Marshes it was a gentle paddle in the soft evening light back to Bowcombe. We had the estuary almost to ourselves save for the occasional flight of curlews (fabulous!) and a special encounter with a very nice lady barbequeing with her teenage son on a little beach - thank you for the hot dog, it was very welcome. Paddling is hungry work!!   It was a really great two hours, thanks Dave.

At the last indoor meeting of the winter series Richard Warren gave an interesting, illustrated talk about the restoration of HMS Trincomalee, from the start of his involvement 36 years ago. The Club is grateful to member Geoff Harvey (centre) for extending his hospitality to Richard and Mrs Warren which meant they were able to travel to Kingsbridge and tell us about Trincomalee.
06.04.2011 PCSO D.Gibson from Salcombe would like any information relating to a red 9ft inflatable express tender named “Sole Bay “ with 3.3 mercury outboard taken from Ditch End, East Portlemouth between Weds 23rd- Mon 28th March. Would appear to have been stolen rather than drifted/borrowed – owner has searched area to no avail. Tel: Salcombe 01548 842107.
05.04.2011 From Nick Alen. The play ‘Bound’ is on at the Drum theatre (part of the Theatre Royal Building) in Plymouth from 21- 25 June 2011.  “Compelled by the threat of bankruptcy, fishing trawler ‘The Violet’ and its mismatched crew are forced out into treacherous weather.  Battling each others’ egos, their ‘lives’ ashore and a relentless storm, will they lose more than a way of life?  Set in Brixham, Bound is a bracingly physical tragic comedy from the ‘Bear Trap, Theatre Company.”
03.04.2011 Scott Bader are converting two units at Cattdown business park which in future will include a demonstration area and proper counter rather than their temporary set up as at present. They remain extremely welcoming and helpful, giving us Club discount as well as being extremely good value anyway. This location is also much easier to access once turning left over Laira Bridge and heading towards QAB when you pass their location which has a large carpark. Ian Drinkwater is hoping to arrange a club visit at some time for a demonstration evening when they are fully set up.
02.04.2011 John Binns has asked that members who are registered passenger or charter vessel operators be advised that should they wish to view marine life there is a training course for accreditation in the South Devon area very shortly. Please contact Colin Speedie, WiSe Scheme, info@wisescheme.org to express an interest and/or find out more.
01.04.2011 A Police message relating to log 344 of the 21st March 2011. A boatyard in Salcombe has reported suspicious activity which leads us to believe that other premises may be at risk of crime in the near future. Ensure that security precautions are reviewed, that CCTV and alarms are working and switched on when premises are unattended. Suspicious activity should be reported to the police. Please phone 08452 777 444 with any information.
28.03.2011 John Binns represented KEBC at the 28 March 2011 Salcombe Harbour Board meeting.Minutes are now available to view. Click HERE.
26.03.2011 Boat Jumble. This was held at Crabshell Quay on 26 March 2011 courtesy of Simon Harrow. Several members sold stuff, and thanks to a raffle (TESCO kindly donated a bottle of single malt whisky) and sales of items donated (principally by Mrs C Smith and Mr M.Wilkinson) £130 was raised for the RNLI and £26.50 for club funds. See photos below.
Boat Jumble. Club bosun Richard has restored the Club's storage trailer to showroom condition. It really will be useful. (thanks Herring Shoes). Members enjoyed the boat jumble and the picture on the right shows that it wasn't attended solely by men with grey beards and jeans. (Click on photos to supersize)
19.03.2011 A KEBC representative team came "first" in a quiz at West Charleton in aid of Prawle Point NCI.
16.03.2011
Presentation to Rob Moore. Rob Moore hung up his rowlocks as Club Chairman after several years. At the March meeting, to warm applause, Ian Drinkwater thanked him for all his work on behalf of KEBC and presented him with a small token of the club members' appreciation. At first Rob thought Ian was giving him a projector, but his smile soon widened when he realised he was being presented with an engraved hip flask set. (Photo: Chris Shipp)
16.03.2011
Lifeboat talk. At a packed March indoor meeting, members were treated to an illustrated presentation about Salcombe Lifeboat by Station Manager Graham Parker. If members would like to sponsor James Hickman who is running in the 2011 London Marathon to raise funds for Salcombe Lifeboat, they can do so at Bonningtons Newsagents in Salcombe or online...Click HERE. Well done James .. best of luck from KEBC.(Photo: Chris Shipp)

The Great Dredge
LATEST: The Great Kingsbridge Basin Dredge finished in February. Bang on schedule in early March harbour staff get down to the job of digging in mooring blocks returning mooring chains and buoys (right). When you moor up in the next month or two, just spare a thought for what some workers had to go through for you to have this privilege!! (Click on photo for close-up of working conditions).
16 January 2011. The Basin is boatless awaiting the dredge.
Van Oord started the long anticipated dredge of Kingsbridge Basin today 31 January 2011. The Roerdomp (means Bittern in Dutch) launch/tug is seen here gently moving the water injection vessel up and down and then slowly chasing suspended mud down the channel on the ebb. (More photos? Click HERE, or HERE, or HERE). Some early effects of the "dredge" are shown below.
15.03.2011 The position of BOATWATCH CO-ORDINATOR is to be a "job share". Neil White will do the administration associated with this role. Steps are underway to secure a matching half to run the planning meeting and induct new leaders.
14.03.2011 Hold on. Relief in sight. After much lobbying, it looks as though Bowcombe Toilets will be open from Good Friday 2011
24.02.2011 Members who frequent Crabshell Quay and the Embankment will be familiar with Stefan (Horbatowski), friend of pigeons, gulls and all creatures great and small. He wasn't a member of KEBC, but in as many years back as we can remember, Stefan has been painstakingly restoring an old gaff rigged cutter in the Rivermaid boatyard. He always hoped to put her through sea trials "next year". It is with sadness that we heard about his passing on 24 February 2011. Message #200 on the Message Board was a tribute to Stefan left by some old friends. His funeral was on 9 March 2011 in Kettering.

John Binns
The AGM, in keeping with the constitution, was held on 16 February 2011 at the Crabshell. At a packed meeting, Rob Moore stood down as Chairman, and was heartily thanked for his tenure. Sir Jonathan took over proceedings and John Binns was elected new Chairman. Only Nick Alen stood down from the Committee. The rest were then re-elected en bloc for a further 12 months. Claire Drinkwater retired as Auditor and member Tom Phillips was elected to this position.
After the AGM member Dave Halsall (of Singing Paddles) gave a talk "An Introduction to Canoeing". Dave, who has paddled all over the world and at a seriously competent level explained the differences between kayaking and canoeing and how canoeing can make nature so accessible. Paddling can take you to parts of the Kingsbridge Estuary that other boats cannot reach.
Paddle Lifting
Dave demonstrated the different sorts of paddle used in different kinds of kayaking and canoeing. He didn't say much about paddle-lifting, which has it roots in weight lifting, but is done with canoe/kayak paddles. Although it is not likely to feature in the Olympics for some time paddle-lifting is growing in popularity. Members were priveleged to see Dave demonstrate some of the lifts. Click on the photo on the left to see them.
27.01.2011
Boatwatch Co-ordinator Ian Drinkwater, John Binns and PC Paul Chesworth visited Crownhill Call Centre Operations to address the issue of providing more valuable marine crime descriptions.
19.01.2011
At the January indoor meeting Madeline was presented with a bunch of flowers for all the work she did in organising a successful Christmas Party. Thank you Madeline.

KNOTS. Some pictures (courtesy of Chris Shipp) of the Club's indoor meeting on knots led by George Howard.
19.01.2011
KNOTS: Although George Howard didn't demonstrate water divining using string at the 19 January 2011 meeting, some 35-40 members had a thoroughly enjoyable evening discovering how to tie knots properly. (See photos above) George's enthusiasm was evident. Thanks George. And thanks also to Marlow Ropes (www.marlowropes.com) for samples of many rope types and Wolf Rock Boat Company for providing rope for members to practice with, at cost. We were invited by George to visit a website which shows how to tie knots. Do visit it, it's fantastic. Click HERE .

KEBC visit Plymouth Naval Base 15 January 2011

The Boat Club had a full day out at the Naval Base and visited the Museums, the "ship of the day" and nuclear submarine HMS Courageous. Photos: Top L to R. 04.01.2011
Right on schedule and as promised, the preparatory work of clearing mooring stones and chains from the basin has been started by Harbour Authority staff. It's dirty cold work but has to be done by the end of the month so that "the Dredge" can start in February. There was some last-minute feverish activity by some boat owners to move their boats from basin moorings.
04.01.2011 High Speed Broadband for Kingsbridge
It looks as though Kingsbridge didn't get a high enough number of broadband users voting for this to qualify.
01.01.2011
Boats still in the Basin.
